RS-485 provides a robust physical layer for Modbus RTU when the network is designed as a controlled trunk rather than improvised point-to-point wiring. Most intermittent faults are caused by topology, reference, termination, noise or configuration inconsistency rather than the protocol itself.

Topology and cable

Use a daisy-chained trunk with short stubs. Avoid star wiring unless an engineered repeater or hub architecture is used. Select an impedance-controlled twisted pair suitable for the environment and route it away from high-current switching conductors where practical.

Termination and bias

Terminate the two physical ends of the trunk according to cable impedance. Apply one intentional fail-safe bias arrangement where required, taking account of any internal bias or termination already enabled in connected devices.

Serial configuration

  • Use a unique slave ID from 1 to 247.
  • Standardise baud rate, parity and stop bits across the segment.
  • Use response delay only where the master or converter requires it.
  • Document auto-baud behaviour and the final locked configuration.
  • Provide a stable common reference and manage shield bonding according to the site earthing design.

Commissioning test

Test the furthest nodes, maximum normal traffic, expected temperature range and major electrical loads. Review CRC errors, timeouts and exception responses, and keep a network schedule containing node address, device identity, cable location and termination state.

Technical basis: PyXis Smart 3-Axis Vibration Sensor TTN-DS-2026-002 and Titania Modbus DI-8 DO-8 TTN-DS-2026-001, both issued 19 July 2026. Confirm the current hardware, firmware and controlled document revision before implementation.
