Remote I/O Is Becoming More Flexible: What Machine Builders Should Standardize Before the Next Retrofit

Why remote I/O flexibility matters now

AutomationDirect announced a universal field-I/O bus coupler on 26 August 2026 aimed at using the same I/O family across third-party and mixed-control environments, with Modbus TCP and EtherNet/IP support. Festo has also highlighted configurable decentralized I/O, where channels can be assigned as inputs or outputs to reduce the number of dedicated module variants machine builders need to engineer and stock.

These announcements are vendor-specific, but the engineering direction is broader: I/O architecture is increasingly expected to simplify expansion, commissioning and brownfield integration.

Five questions to ask before standardizing an I/O platform

1. What must remain compatible?

List the installed PLCs, gateways, serial networks and field devices that cannot economically be replaced. A retrofit should start from the real installed base rather than an ideal greenfield architecture.

2. Which signals are actually required?

Separate digital inputs, digital outputs, counters, analog signals and special functions. Then account for spare capacity and likely machine changes. This prevents paying for unused capability while avoiding a design with no expansion margin.

3. Where should decisions happen?

Not every field action needs a round trip to a supervisory controller. Where the application permits it, local I/O behavior can reduce unnecessary communications and keep simple machine functions close to the field interface.

4. What diagnostics will maintenance receive?

Commissioning convenience is only part of lifecycle cost. Maintenance teams benefit when the I/O layer exposes useful channel and communication diagnostics instead of reducing every problem to a generic PLC alarm.

5. Can the architecture survive the next controller change?

For brownfield plants and OEM platforms, the most valuable standard is often the one that reduces redesign when a controller, network or machine variant changes.
