Continuous Pump Condition Monitoring for Water and Wastewater Facilities

A practical PyXis deployment model for centrifugal pumps, booster stations and treatment assets where early fault detection and remote visibility matter.

Continuous Pump Condition Monitoring for Water and Wastewater Facilities

Pumps in water and wastewater service are exposed to changing hydraulic load, cavitation risk, bearing wear, coupling faults and periods of unattended operation. A permanent PyXis monitoring point can translate triaxial vibration and temperature into compact condition information that is practical for PLC, SCADA and maintenance workflows.

Recommended monitoring arrangement

Mount PyXis rigidly on the motor or pump bearing housing at a location with a direct mechanical path to the rotating assembly. Align and document the X, Y and Z axes so radial-horizontal, radial-vertical and axial behaviour can be compared consistently. Where the duty is critical, use separate points on the drive-end and pump-end bearings.

  • Trend velocity RMS for overall mechanical condition.
  • Use acceleration peaks, crest factor and advanced impulsiveness indicators to screen for bearing deterioration.
  • Monitor displacement at lower frequencies where looseness or structural movement is relevant.
  • Correlate sensor and motor temperature with vibration and process state.

Hydraulic and mechanical interpretation

Vibration should be reviewed together with suction pressure, discharge pressure, flow, valve position and pump operating state. Cavitation, recirculation and air entrainment can produce broad-band energy that resembles mechanical deterioration. Harmonic and order information helps separate shaft-speed effects from hydraulic excitation, but diagnosis should be confirmed against the process condition.

SCADA and maintenance integration

Read severity, fault state, harmonics, RPM quality, temperature and prognostic values over Modbus RTU. Use SCADA for current condition and alarm visibility, a historian for trend retention and CMMS integration for inspection or work-order initiation. Warning limits should support planned intervention, while alarm limits should be tied to an approved operational response.

Commissioning and governance

  • Capture a healthy baseline across normal pump duty points.
  • Apply persistence or operating-state logic to avoid start-up nuisance alarms.
  • Record mounting method, axis orientation, firmware and register-map revision.
  • Review thresholds after overhaul, alignment work or significant process change.

PyXis condition indicators support engineering decisions; they do not replace hydraulic assessment, alignment verification or site safety procedures.

Technical basis: PyXis Smart 3-Axis Vibration Sensor datasheet TTN-DS-2026-002, issued 19 July 2026. Confirm the current hardware, firmware and controlled document revision before implementation.
