Retrofitting Condition Monitoring onto Legacy Machinery

A phased PyXis approach for adding continuous vibration intelligence to existing machines without replacing the PLC or control system.

Retrofitting Condition Monitoring onto Legacy Machinery

Brownfield plants often contain mechanically valuable equipment with limited instrumentation and proprietary controls. PyXis can add machine-condition information through a separate RS-485 path while leaving the original control logic unchanged.

Survey before installation

  • Identify critical assets, failure history and accessible bearing locations.
  • Confirm available 12 or 24 VDC power and cable routes.
  • Review electrical noise, enclosure, temperature and ingress requirements.
  • Decide whether the existing PLC, a gateway or a dedicated IPC will poll Modbus data.

Non-disruptive deployment

Start with a small number of representative machines. Use magnetic mounting for short assessment work where appropriate, then move permanent points to rigid stud mounting. Validate data quality and maintenance usefulness before scaling to the wider fleet.

Integration without control risk

Treat the condition-monitoring path as advisory during the first phase. Display alarms and trends without automatically stopping machinery until thresholds, operating-state logic and response procedures have been validated. Any later control interlock should be independently reviewed and approved.

Scale with standards

Create a repeatable naming convention, register template, baseline procedure and CMMS workflow. Standardisation makes a brownfield programme maintainable across different machine types and control platforms.

Technical basis: PyXis Smart 3-Axis Vibration Sensor TTN-DS-2026-002 and Titania Modbus DI-8 DO-8 TTN-DS-2026-001, both issued 19 July 2026. Confirm the current hardware, firmware and controlled document revision before implementation.
