Digital inputs can provide more than ON/OFF status. Per-channel counting and frequency measurement allow the same module to acquire production cycles, encoder pulses, flow pulses and speed-related signals.

Counter engineering

A 32-bit counter can accumulate up to 4,294,967,295 events before rollover. The supervisory system must define whether rollover is handled by difference calculation, periodic reset or higher-level totalisation.

Edge selection

Choose rising or falling edge according to the sensor transition that is most stable and meaningful. Avoid counting both edges unless the application and scaling explicitly require it.

Filter selection

  • Use short filters for clean electronic pulses and high-frequency signals.
  • Use longer filters for mechanical contacts affected by bounce.
  • Confirm that filter time remains comfortably below the valid pulse width.
  • Validate the maximum frequency under worst-case duty cycle, cable and noise conditions.

Operational integration

Read both count and frequency where possible. Frequency detects current motion or rate, while accumulated count supports total production and event history. Add quality logic for missing pulses, implausible jumps and communication loss.
