Compressor Condition Monitoring Across Changing Load States

Compressors combine rotating, reciprocating, pressure and thermal effects. Their vibration signature can change significantly between unloaded, partially loaded and fully loaded operation. Effective monitoring therefore requires asset context as well as reliable measurement.

Measurement strategy

Install the sensor at a structurally representative bearing or casing location and document the axis orientation. For large machines, multiple points may be required to separate motor, compressor and gearbox behaviour. Use acceleration, velocity and displacement according to the fault and frequency range of interest.

Operating-state baselines

Create baseline expectations for the compressor states that occur in normal service. Review vibration with discharge pressure, temperature, load/unload status and speed. This prevents a legitimate process transition from being treated as degradation.

Diagnostic priorities

  • Track 1X and harmonics for imbalance, looseness and alignment investigation.
  • Use impulsiveness and resonant-band indicators for bearing or valve-related impacts.
  • Review sideband density and harmonic consistency where modulation is present.
  • Correlate thermal rise with vibration and operating duty.

Integration outcome

Expose compact condition values over Modbus to the compressor controller or plant SCADA, while retaining trends in a historian. Use CMMS rules to initiate inspection when multiple indicators agree, rather than relying on one instantaneous alarm.
