Local edge functions reduce repetitive host traffic and allow selected behaviour to continue when the network is unavailable. Their value depends on clear scope, deterministic configuration and maintainable documentation.

Logic and pattern matching

Per-output input masks can implement AND, OR, XOR, NAND, NOR and XNOR relationships. Pattern matching compares the eight input states against a configured pattern and can invert individual input polarity before evaluation.

Programmable sequencing

A sequencer can run linear or pendulum patterns using an active-channel mask, step interval, pulse width, inter-sequence delay and one-cycle or repeating operation. Typical uses include valve order, lamp tests and repetitive machine actions.

Alarm annunciation

An annunciator can map selected inputs to steady or blinking outputs using active-high or active-low logic and a configured flash interval. The design should define acknowledgement, reset, test and priority behaviour at the system level.

Governance

  • Maintain a controlled configuration record for every local mode.
  • Prevent conflicting PLC commands and local logic from driving the same output unpredictably.
  • Provide clear indication when the module is operating autonomously.
  • Test all sequence transitions, delays and interruption cases.
