High-Side Outputs and Inductive Load Protection

How protected 24 VDC sourcing outputs should be applied to solenoids, relays, lamps and other industrial loads.

A high-side PNP output switches positive field voltage to the load. Correct load connection, current assessment and transient control are essential for reliable operation, especially with coils and other inductive devices.

Continuous and peak current

The documented Titania output supports 0.7 A continuous current per channel with all eight channels active, subject to ambient and thermal conditions. Short-duration surge and current limiting are approximately 1.1 A. Inrush must be evaluated, not only steady-state current.

Inductive energy

When an inductive load is switched off, its stored energy produces a voltage transient. Internal active clamping protects the output driver and controls current decay. External suppression may still be required where faster or slower release behaviour is needed, provided it is compatible with the driver.

Design checklist

  • Confirm field-supply voltage, polarity and protective device rating.
  • Include ON-state voltage drop when calculating load terminal voltage.
  • Assess simultaneous channel loading and enclosure temperature.
  • Use output fault and commanded-state feedback in diagnostics.
  • Commission power-up and communication-loss values before automatic operation.
