Integrating Condition Monitoring over Modbus RTU

Modbus RTU makes condition information accessible to conventional automation systems. Reliable integration depends on disciplined register control, serial configuration, data typing and exception handling.

Commission the serial link

Assign a unique slave ID from 1 to 247 and configure a supported baud rate, parity, stop-bit format and response delay. Auto-baud can simplify commissioning, but the final network settings should be documented and consistent.

Control the data model

Record the register address, table, access mode, data type, scaling, unit, word order and update behaviour for every imported value. Machine-profile settings and alarm thresholds should be write-protected in the supervisory application unless authorised configuration is required.

Separate fast and slow data

  • Read immediate states and alarms at a rate appropriate to the operational response.
  • Read trends, harmonic sets and prognostic values at a slower interval to reduce network loading.
  • Use communications watchdogs and stale-data logic so old values are not mistaken for current machine condition.
  • Store device code, hardware version, firmware version and serial number in the asset record.

Integrate beyond SCADA

The PLC or gateway can pass selected health values into historian, CMMS and analytics systems. Preserve the original timestamp, unit, machine state and quality so maintenance users can interpret the trend correctly.
